I Didn't Choose Childcare. It Chose Me!

Picture

For years I was miserable, working for money and what I was good at, not doing what I loved and what my heart was calling for. I went from job to job searching for something I couldn't name. It wasn't until I became a Nurse Assistant that something shifted. I loved caring for people. But then came a little girl who changed everything. She had many disabilities. She was nonverbal. But she could feel and express every emotion through her eyes, her facial expressions, her presence. We connected in a way I can't fully explain. She felt safe with me. And when her mother would arrive, unsure and observing, that little girl would smile. Not just any smile. A smile that said to her mother, I'm okay. I'm in good hands. That smile captured my heart. And it never let go.

I became a mother at 18. My first son arrived at 32 weeks, diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and Asthma. Five years later my second son was born at 28 weeks with tachycardia and medical challenges that required therapy. I was a teen and young adult mother, but maturing during that time came natural. Being a mother to not one, but two premature babies taught me love, grace, and patience. It taught me how important it was to have a village. People who show up, who support, who don't let you navigate the hard things alone. I didn't know it then, but God was molding me. Every sleepless night, every therapy session, and every moment of uncertainty, was all preparation.

Then came the news that changed everything. I would not be able to have more children.

I went to God broken. I cried and asked why. Why close the door of my desire to have more children?
God answered.
"You will be mother to many."

God took me back to the very beginning. Back to little Laverne — the little girl who had no worry or care in the world. The little girl who played school with her siblings, her dolls, and even the family dog. Always dressing up. Always teaching. Always nurturing. The memories of my young self are always refreshing. Something told me I could find my gift and what I loved there. And I did. It was confirmation.
I have always been connected to little Laverne. But this moment gave our connection greater meaning.
On June 1, 2012, after an experience at my job came another confirmation. I pulled the resignation letter out of my desk and I walked away.
I spent the rest of that month with my grandmother. She transitioned from us on June 29, 2012.
She was mother to many. She raised children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and others who needed her. Around age 13, she was granted full custody of me. She wasn't just my grandmother. She was my mother in every way that mattered.
Shortly after her funeral, my aunts and I went out to dinner. My oldest aunt handed out letters to her sisters and me — letters written by my grandmother in the early 90s, when she was sick and didn't think she would survive.
I opened mine. She said, "Start the business." She expected me to open a hair salon. She had no idea it wouldn't be. But God did. He took her words and redirected them toward something even greater. In that moment I realized — the calling didn't start with me. It started with her. She saw it in me first. That was the moment I stopped letting fear hold me back. Things began to align for me, and in 2013, I became a Licensed Child Care Provider.

Today, Heavenly Made Creations is a Star 4 Nationally Accredited Family Group Home Program. This is a calling fulfilled.
I advocate for Early Childhood Education. I advocate for Early Childhood Educators. Most of all, I advocate for the families in my community — because I know what it means to need a village.
My grandmother, Bertha Johnson, saw my calling before I could see it in myself. God took her words and built something neither of us could have imagined. And every child who walks through the door is proof that His plan will always come to pass, if we let it.

If you are looking for more than a daycare — a place built on purpose, love, and faith — we are ready for you.
